Dental Services

Examinations
A complete examination of hard and soft tissues of the mouth is performed on your initial visit to the office. This generally includes intraoral photographs and necessary xrays. Recall examinations and periodontal examinations are performed every 6 months during scaling and prophylaxis visits.

Radiographs

Scaling/Polishing
Following your initial complete examination a program of regular scaling and prophylaxis tailored to your specific dental hygiene needs will be recommended. Typically scaling and prophylaxis of the teeth should be performed every 6 months. However many patients (those with periodontal problems, smokers, the medically compromised and seniors) require more frequent sessions such as every 3 to 4 months.

Restorative
Restoration of decayed, chipped, fractured teeth. The treatment includes resin (white)fillings, porcelain onlays and crowns(caps). Our office uses tooth colored filling materials for restoring teeth.

Periodontics
Periodontal (Gum Treatment)
Non Surgical:
- Oral Hygiene Instruction
- Thorough Cleaning also known as Scaling and Root Planing
- Medication Therapy such as Antibiotics when necessary
- Preventive Maintenance

Crowns
Teeth that have had many fillings over the years as a result of tooth decay or tooth fracture can be restored with crowns. A crown can be made from a variety of materials, all porcelain, porcelain bonded to metal or full gold. It is custom made to cover the entire tooth. A crown is recommended to restore teeth in situations where normal fillings can no longer provide long term predictable success.

Bridges
Bridges are similar to crowns but are used to replace missing teeth. Fixed bridges are cemented in place and are not removable. In making bridges the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth are used to support the bridge.

Dental Implants
Dental implants are artificial roots that are designed to replace missing teeth. A dental implant, which is made of Titanium, fuses to the natural bone after it is placed.
Implants are placed in two stages; the first stage involves placing the artificial titanium implant into position. After a period of anywhere from 1-6 months of healing, a porcelain crown is placed over the top of the implant. Dental implants can also be used to secure complete or partial dentures into position, thereby improving denture stability.
Implants require proper brushing and flossing and are monitored at regular check-ups.

Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy is the process of removing infected or injured pulp tissue (nerves and blood tissue) found in the middle of a tooth and root. A pulp can undergo irreversible changes for several reasons:
- Large, deep cavities or fillings
- Significant tooth wear/abrasion
- Cracked tooth and or root
- Damaged tooth structure as a result of trauma
- Idiopathic root resorption
Root canal treatment may require several visits but is frequently done in one visit: Many times this procedure is done with the aid of a surgical operating microscope which enhances our vision and magnifies the tooth root up to 10X. The infected pulp tissue is removed and the root canal space is cleaned and disinfected . The next step involves filling the root canal space with a thermoplasticized material called Gutta Percha. After the root canal treatment is completed, a crown or onlay is usually indicated to prevent fracture of the tooth. Root canal treatment generally has over 90% success rate. However in cases where the prognosis is less we will consult with you further to determine the best course of action.

Cosmetic Dentistry
Tooth whitening
Two methods are available:
- Take home kit: which involves custom fitted trays which are applied daily for 10-21 days
- In office: Treatment time – a 1-2 hour appointment (followed by one week take home kit with custom fitted trays)
Porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers are ultra thin porcelain facings that are bonded to the front surface of a natural tooth.

Children and Seniors
Children and adolescents
It is very important to stress good hygiene habits from an early age. We use an easygoing non confrontational approach to treating kids. Parents are encouraged to bring their children in as early as one year of age for a screening and review of oral hygiene and diet.
Seniors
Keeping one’s teeth and smile in good condition is important at any age. Our quality of life frequently depends on being able to eat. One is never too old for comfort and confidence.

Emergency
We will do our best to accommodate all dental emergencies the same day!
For after hours and weekend dental emergencies our office answering service will direct you to an emergency dental service.

Dentures
Full and partial dentures are used to replace missing teeth. Dentures provide excellent esthetics and function in situations where multiple teeth have been lost either from disease or accident. In certain situations dentures can be made that are supported by dental implants providing a more stable base.

Appliances
Nightguards, Bruxism Appliances
Nightguards and Bruxism Appliances are used for patients who grind or clench their teeth. A custom fitted “guard” may be recommended if you suffer with chronic conditions such as TemporoMandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD), or if you grind or clench your teeth. The guard will prevent teeth from being worn down.

Mouthguards
Athletic Mouthguards
Custom fitted athletic mouthguards protect the teeth from injury while playing sports and also reduce the chance of concussions. They are recommended for active children and adults, and can be made in a variety of colours.

Sedation
For those patients who experience high anxiety before and during dental appointments light oral sedation is available. This is accomplished with the use of a low dose sedative tablet taken under the tongue 1 hour before the appointment. Patients are advised to have a responsible adult escort them to and from the office.

Oral Surgery
When a tooth is removed (extracted) it is called an oral surgical procedure.
Examples of teeth needing extraction are:
- Severe, non-restorable decay
- Advanced periodontal (“gum”) disease
- A fractured tooth beyond reasonable repair
- A poorly positioned tooth in the mouth, such as a wisdom tooth
- When necessary to prepare for orthodontic treatment
MAJOR ORAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES ARE REFERRED TO AN ORAL SURGERY SPECIALIST.
Examples include:
Impacted wisdom teeth removal, corrective jaw surgery, removal of cysts/tumours and bone grafts.
